With all three spiritual stones in his possession Link makes his way back to Hyrule Castle and to Princess Zelda. Upon his approach, however, he realizes that something is wrong when he sees the castle burning in the distance. Worried about the well being of Princess Zelda Link hurries to the castle while trying to avoid all the fleeing townsfolk. From the sound of their cries it is obvious that Ganondorf is the one behind it all.
Upon reaching the castle Link finds Zelda and Impa cornered by Ganondorf on a balcony. Trying to reach them so that he may help her he is stopped by a Stalfos and is quickly overpowered by him. The two of them then flee on horseback. Although Zelda begs Impa to stop the horse she refuses out of fear that they will be killed. Knowing there to be no alternative she throws to him her ocarina, the Ocarina of Time, that is required to open the door to the Sacred Realm. Exhausted, Link picks it up, but is then confronted by Ganondorf. Demanding that he hand over the Ocarina of Time Link responds to his threat by attacking him. Unfortunately, Link is no match for him and is easily thrown aside, dropping the ocarina Saria gave him. Confusing it for the Ocarina of Time Ganondrof triumphantly picks it up and leaves Link. Distraught over the fact that he is unable to defeat Ganondorf, and loosing Saria's ocarina, Link breaks down. He then remembers the words that Zelda told him during their first meeting.
Zelda: The entrance to the Sacred Realm is in the Temple of Time. The key to opening the door is...the Ocarina of Time.
‐ Volume 1; Ocarina of Time - Chapter 6
With those words in mind Link hurries to the Temple of Time. Once there he stands before the altar and plays the song that Zelda taught him. The Door of Time opens behind it and on the other side is revealed to be the legendary blade, The Master Sword. Approaching it he wonders if such a thing will help him defeat Ganondorf. Cautiously he draws it from the pedestal, but is then unexpectedly surrounded by a ray of light. After catching a glimpse of Ganondorf, Link soon hears an unfamiliar voice calling to a hero; calling to him.
Link awakens to find himself completely changed; what was once a young child now stood an adult. He soon realizes he is also not alone. Introducing himself as Rauru he explains to Link all that had happened. He learns that he had been asleep for seven years and since then Ganondorf had entered the Sacred Realm and seized control of the Triforce of Power. Rauru continues to tell Link that he is the Hero of Time and in order to save Hyrule he must lift the curse on the five temples and awaken the sages to combine their power with his. Link also learns the truth of his lineage; that he is not a Kokiri, but instead a Hylian who was born to the house of a knight that had served the Hyrulean King before Hyrule had been unified. He went on to explain that his father died in battle during the war and his mother fled with the baby Link to the forbidden woods where she then died from her wounds. Sensing the child's destiny was linked to the fate of Hyrule The Great Deku Tree took him in and raised him as a Kokiri.
With this knowledge in hand Link accepts his destiny, without fear or doubt. With the means to face Ganondorf as an equal he grips the Master Sword tightly; this time he will defeat Ganondorf, and protect Princess Zelda.
